Last Thursday morning, a Fort Lauderdale commuter train accident killed two people. Another train accident victim remained in critical condition four days after the incident.
A 44-year-old woman from East Tennessee reportedly drove onto the tracks just as the lights flashed and the crossing gates lowered. The driver tried to back up and hit the crossing arm behind her car. Other drivers honked frantically in attempt to warn her, seconds before the commuter train reached the crossing, flipping the car off the side and throwing two people from the vehicle. Only one passenger survived the collision.
According to Fort Lauderdale Police, a preliminary investigation showed that all the safety features at the crossing were properly functioning. However, the commuter train accident remains under investigation.
